I know I’m not the only one who has noticed that the volume in movie theaters seems to have gotten louder and louder. It’s not just the special screenings in the Dolby Cinemas or films shown in IMAX, it’s become every movie. Shoot, even the previews have gotten louder.

Since I was young, I was taught that hearing loss and damage is irreversible. Once your hearing is gone, it’s gone. Growing up, I’ve tried to be mindful of excessively loud situations. For example, keeping my headphone volume at a reasonable level. However, I’ve come to the harsh realization that I may not be being as careful as I thought.

The truth is: Despite my better judgement, I’m probably experiencing hearing loss at the movie theaters.

While watching Disclosure Day, it got to a point where I was covering my ears with my hands and attempting to use piece of tissue to muffle some of the sound. I felt incredibly silly and ill-prepared in that situation. Sort of like when your lips are chapped and you would do anything in the world for some chapstick. I swore in that moment that I wouldn’t be caught slipping again.

I’ve learned my lesson and have taken note. Moving forward, I will be taking and using ear plugs while I’m seeing movies in theaters. I love the experience and thrill of going to the movies, but not enough to suffer hearing damage from.
